GRAVE DANGER

After the person’s mummified body was placed in the sarcophagus, the coffin was then carried to its final resting place in a big procession. The family would show their grief by weeping loudly and tearing their clothes. If they couldn’t make enough noise, professional mourners were hired to join in the sadness. Women waved their arms in the air and threw dust over their hair. At the door of the tomb, performers called muu put on reed crowns and did a silent dance.

It took so long to dig a tomb that one of the first things a pharaoh did when he took the throne was pick out the place where he wanted to be buried. During the New Kingdom period, royal mummies were buried in the Valley of the Kings, a small canyon surrounded by steep cliffs across the Nile River from the ancient capital of Thebes. More than 130 different tombs have been found in the area, many of which are very elaborate. The tomb of Queen Nefertari has been called “the Sistine Chapel of Egypt” because of the beautiful paintings on the walls and ceiling.

JUNIOR GENIUS JOVIALITY

Q: Why did the mummy have a hard time falling asleep in his tomb?
